Wisconsin Allows High School Football Team to Reduce Regular Season Games Starting in 2012

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association has voted reduce the regular season in 2012 from nine games to eight.

The change, which is only for the 2012 season, was made after coaches and school officials raised concerns that the first day of practice would be August 1st.  The early starting date was caused by a vote by the WIAA last year that moved the start of the season up by one week to avoid a scheduling crunch at playoff time that caused teams to play three games in 10 days.

The WIAA is asking that the Wisconsin Coaches Association come-up with other scheduling ideas beyond the 2012 season.  Under the eight game schedule, teams that do not qualify for the playoffs would have the option of  scheduling a ninth game.

Practice for the 2012 season will now begin on August 6th.
